My name is Bella Renshaw and I have a story to tell you all of my life being saved by my doctors, Dr Rees and Dr Kinghorn and my Mom and Dad.

I am a pure Persian and was born on the 26 March 2012, the runt of the litter so at 9 weeks old, I weighed 300grams and I had a heart murmur.

No one thought I would survive but I slept in my Mom’s neck for 3 months and she hand fed me – in the beginning I took 30 mins to eat 1 crunchie so it was hard work for my Mom who never gave up.

I have a brother called Brody and he is much bigger than me and he terrorises me but we love each other.

At the end of last year when the Diwali firecracker celebration took place, I was terrified and so traumatised I went into high end stage 4 kidney failure within 1 week. I was 4 years old

My Creatinine tests showed a count of 1162 – normal levels should be between 71 and 112.

I had never had a kidney test before so we assumed I already had a kidney problem that just got much worse from the shock of Diwali – it sounded like a war zone where I live.

I was really ill and had to see the Specialist Dr Rees – he said I was really bad and not sure if I would survive – I was put in hospital in my own private ward and put on a drip with a purple bandage.

My weight had dropped from 3.8 kgs to 2.6kgs – I was very skinny.

My eyes were closed the whole weekend and I was very sick – my mom came and held me in her neck again and kissed and spoke to me for hours – my dad also came and spoke to me and gave me lots of love – I knew my mom and dad were crying and very sad.

I managed to survive the weekend and my creatinine levels dropped down to 529 but I was still high end stage 4 kidney failure.

I went home with my parents who had to hydrate me with a very big needle in the back of my neck every 2nd day from a drip for 6 months.

It was very sore and my neck used to blow up very big. I believe my mom and dad were told I had about 6 months left if they kept hydrating me.

I went for my 6 month check up on the 07th of June this year – Dr Rees did the test and you will never believe the result!!!!

My levels had gone down to 111 which put me in the normal range and I was no longer dying!!!!

It was then determined that the Diwali celebration had shocked me so bad it traumatised my body.

I am being weaned off my drip for 4 weeks and then back to my normal life but staying full time on a pure kidney diet – my weight has gone back up to 3.15kgs

I am so grateful to my Doctors and my Mom and Dad who never gave up on me – it would have been so easy to have me put down that terrible weekend in November. But no one gave up on me.

I am now 5 years old and standing up to my big brother and giving him a few smacks.

My Mom did tell me that it is very important that we all have a kidney function test when we are young so the doctors have a guideline to work with – if we had done that my Mom and Dad would have not had such sadness for the last 6 months thinking I was dying – they would have known it was a trauma and to just nurse me back to health – so get out there and ask your parents to have your kidneys tested

Working with dogs for a living I need to know I have a vet that I can rely on.

I have been a client of La Lucia Vet since 2002 first at Sunnningdale Vet then to La Lucia Vet, and I have always been very happy with their service. The Vets, the locums & front ladies always have time for a chat and help me with any queries.

While I was study Animal Ethology Dr Elsa Van Biljon gave up her time to help and guide me through the biological side of the studies which I am truly grateful.

You can not expect every visit to the vet to be a happy one when you have a sick or injured pet but dealing with people who care and are in their profession with the animals best interests in heart does help put your mind at rest that your animal is in good hands.

I can happily say that I would recommend the vets at this clinic to my family, friends and clients.

Thank you Dr Elsa van Biljon and Dr Bruce Kinghorn for all your medical advice, treatment and care over my animals in the past years!

A client for life.

My first dealings with Bruce Kinghorn coincided with my first feral cat “rescue”  way back  1997. Thanks to Bruce’s care one of those kittens lived to 15 years of age, sadly his sibling was FIV positive and only lived for 3 years, she was given such good care, and we tried everything to make her better.

The past 16 years and numerous stray cats and rescue dogs later , we still rely heavily on the kindness of this special team. Having acquired numerous animals (some invited, some moved in of their own accord) there have been some incredibly sad visits to the vet, such as having beloved pets put to sleep.

All of our animals have come with different challenges and when Bruce felt he was “flummoxed” such as with our dog Foxy, he referred us to a specialist physician, we have also had  to make the dreaded middle of the night journey to the all night veterinary practice in Sherwood and were delighted to have found members of Bruce’s team there to assist us.

The advice and guidance over the past 16 years has been immeasurable, for example, Bruce recommended excellent Boarding Kennels to us a few years back and to date we are still using them.

When we visit La Lucia veterinary practice, it feels as if we are going to visit friends.

Margarita & John Fuller

Zeta & Ember ( the dogs)

Black Panther, Chloe, Brutus, Beetos, Ollie, Thisbe, Smokey, Chico & Mary( the kitties)

Mummy & Rosie (the abandoned cats at the end of the road)

The well being of my pets is of paramount importance in my life - this is one of the main reasons that I trust and depend on La Lucia Vet Clinic and Riverside Vet Clinic for any and all of my "pet problems",  be they small things like pesty fleas or big things like leg operations and other surgeries.

Over several years I have found the staff to be amazingly kind people, and the vets to be knowledgeable, sympathetic, and absolutely awesome to my animals!!!  And of course the Pets Cafe is packed with goodies for the most pampered pets and is a pleasure to visit!

I will most certainly continue to support these Clinics as long as I have pets and will recommend them to all and sundry!!!

Carry on guys! You are doing a fantastic job!
